This project centres on an exhibition of a body of work by leading Irish artist, Vincent Devine, co-created with cancer researchers at the UCD Conway Institute, University College Dublin, which will take place in two community venues during Science Week with an accompanying public engagement event at each location.
Inspired by the iconic drawing of ‘The Vitruvian Man’ by artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent Devine has created a striking image of an androgynous human to visually map the different perspectives and approaches that researchers use to understand cancer at molecular, cellular, tissue and human levels.

An evening exploring science and style as it relates to the menopause. The evening will commence at 7.45pm with a reception for participants so please come early for some tasty food. The event will start at 8pm and will be facilitated by Midlands Science.
The two speakers are experts in their fields – Dr Mary Ryan, author of “It’s Probably Your Hormones” and Aoife Dunican of The Stylebob.
Dr Mary Ryan trained at Trinity College Dublin and obtained her MB BCH BAO in 1992. She then specialised in Endocrinology and General Medicine. She is on the Specialist Registrar and is a regular contributor to the media and health podcasts. Her book “It’s Probably Your Hormones” is a best-seller. As an endocrinologist she explains in plain language the effect hormones can have on our physical and mental wellbeing, and tells us how to balance them to optimise our health throughout our lives. Unexplained weight gain? Loss of libido? New-onset acne? These are just some of the possible signs that something is not right with your hormones. Women often start paying attention to their hormones when they approach menopause, but good hormone health is important throughout our lives. Dr Mary Ryan explains how by tackling problems when they arise, we can take control and improve our well-being. The unfortunate truth is that many women struggle to have their health taken seriously and fail to get the support needed to manage debilitating symptoms. In her revelatory and timely book, Dr Mary Ryan shows us how we to recognise issues and balance our hormones with various treatment options, including HRT, diet, sleep and exercise, so that we can live happy, healthy and balanced lives at any age.
Aoife Dunican will speak about the power of your image for communication, confidence and impact. She is the owner of The Stylebob, a personal and corporate consultancy, helping women amplify their image for confidence, presence, and impact. Your clothes and image can help guide your story towards achieving personal and professional goals. Your wardrobe should make you feel unstoppable and represent who you are and where you are going. With over 15 years of experience in marketing and professional services, Aoife has a real have a real insight into how people communicate and speaks about the power of image globally with firms and networks from London to Australia. Aoife has a strong sustainable approach to fashion and is a regular contributor to newspapers, radio, and magazines on her style ethos. Aoife loves seeing people reach their true potential when they look and feel ready to show up with confidence and impact. We are always giving little clues as to who we are and our wardrobe is that silent tool with the biggest noise. Listen to the four C’s system that Aoife has created to help you create a confident wardrobe. Aoife will help you get out of your own way and use your unique style to step into your brilliance.
After both speakers, there will be lots of time for discussion and questions and answers, so come along and have all your midlife and menopause queries on everything from hormones to hats answered !!

Join author Niamh Boyce and Midlands Science for a half day writing workshop where we will be inspired by science, everything from astronomy to zoology is open to you to write about, whether it’s a short piece of flash fiction or a poem. The workshop will be facilitated by Laois author Niamh Boyce and she will be assisted by poet and science communicator Jackie Gorman. Participants will create work on the day and after editing, pieces will be collated into a short publication which will be published by Midlands Science. The theme for Science Week this year is being human and what could be more human than creativity and writing about the experience of being human.
Niamh Boyce won The Hennessy New Irish Writer of the Year in 2012 for her poetry, subsequently collected in Inside The Wolf. Her debut novel The Herbalist was an Irish Writer’s Centre Novel Fair Winner. An instant bestseller, it also won Debut of the Year at the Irish Book Awards and was nominated for an IMPAC. Her Kind, her second novel, is based on the witchcraft trial of Alice Kyteler. Nominated for the EU Prize for literature, the judges called it ‘as searing a critique of our own times as is Arthur Millar’s The Crucible.’ Niamh was recently awarded the 2022 Dennis O Driscoll Literary Award by Kildare County Council. Jackie Gorman is a poet who works in science communications. She received the Listowel Writers’ Week Single Poem Award in 2017 and her 2019 debut The Wounded Stork was described by Martin Dyar as “an engrossing and ecologically attuned debut.” She received the Science Foundation Ireland Outstanding Contribution to Science Communications Award in 2022.
