Event Details

How much science in the blockbuster scientific films is science fiction or Science Faction? For Science Faction, Siobhan Hickey, Barry Fitzgerald, and Andy Gaffney (the crew of the podcast ‘Sound in Space’) will delve in to the science and s tories of three Hollywood blockbuster films.

Is it possible to clone dinosaurs, and should we have dinosaur zoos in the future just like in Jurassic Park? Could we change how time flows as shown in Tenet? And will we ever be able to control the weather from outer space as featured in Geos torm? With science almost anything is possible, but what’s the line between fiction and fact? Check out Science Faction for the answers (well some of the answers). This video is now available on the Midlands Science YouTube Channel.

    Event Details

People often say it’s not rocket science but in this case, it is! Explore the science and physics of rockets with Dr Dan Nickstrom, who presents the Midlands Science show Science at Home. Rocket science is all about using rocket propulsion to move anything from a firework to a manned spaceship.

At the heart of rocketry is Isaac New ton’s Third Law of Motion, something that’s been established for over 300 years. It says that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. If you stand in front of a wall and push it hard, you will move backwards. There are three basic requirements to a working rocket: get it moving, overcome the pull of gravity and plot a course. Tune in and learn about all it!
