There are some popular ideas about how cancer starts or can be cured. These ideas are often scientifically wrong but can seem attractive and are often spread through social media and other outlets. Wrong ideas about cancer can cause unnecessary worry and can often hinder informed decisions about cancer prevention and treatment. In this age of misinformation, how can we understand this ancient and complex issue ? This event as part of the Midlands Science Festival will explore what we now know about various types of cancer, their causes and cures. Dr Robert O’Connor, Head of Research with the Irish Cancer Society and Dr Craig Slattery of UCD will also look at how citizens and patients can become more fully informed about cancer causes and cures, busting a few myths about sugar, deodorants, chemotherapy and lots of other things along the way. Questions and discussion are also encouraged at this event.
