There was lots to discover in Tullamore last weekend at the Discovery Day held in Mucklagh, including stick insects, rockets, gyroscopes, slime, astronauts and snakes. The Discovery Day is an annual family day event as part of the Midlands Science Festival in association with Integra. The Midlands Science Festival is managed by Midlands Science and funded by Research Ireland as part of national Science Week.
There was literally something for everyone, from a to z, from astronomy to zoology at the event and over 800 people registered for this popular family day. There was the chance to get up close and personal with tarantulas and snakes with The Reptile Zoo, learn all about space exploration, make rockets and slime and much more. W5, Northern Ireland’s Science Museum were on site with their amazing show “Now, That’s What I Call Science.”
Participants also had the chance to explore the night’s sky in the Exploration Dome, Ireland’s largest mobile planetarium and learn all about space exploration with Channel 4 star Simon Watt. With all this happening under one roof, it was a busy and very fun day for all participants.
Jackie Gorman, CEO of Midlands Science commented ; “it was great to see such a large number of people at today’s event which is always a Science Week highlight for us. Experiences such as these in a fun family environment can be really important for young children in planting the seeds of curiosity which may become a life in science and discovery in the future. There’s a wide range of activities happening all across the midlands and we would encourage everyone to take part and discover the fun and curiosity that lies at the heart of science.”
